Which upholstery fabrics are the most durable and easy to clean?

From the point of view of an upholstered furniture technologist, the choice of fabric is not only an aesthetic decision. It is the cover that most determines how a piece resists abrasion, dirt, pet hair and everyday use, which is why a manufacturer of upholstered furniture should assess not only colour and weave but also parameters confirmed by testing.

What is the Martindale test and how many cycles should good upholstery have?

The Martindale test is one of the basic methods for assessing the abrasion resistance of a fabric. The test is described by the standard PN-EN ISO 12947 / ISO 12947. A sample of the material is subjected to controlled rubbing against an abrasive, and the result is given as the number of cycles needed to reach a defined degree of wear.

In practice, when choosing upholstery for the home, the following ranges can be used:

  • below 10,000 cycles - decorative fabrics or fabrics for very light use,
  • 20,000-30,000 cycles - a level sufficient for standard domestic use,
  • 45,000-50,000 cycles and above - high resistance suitable for intensively used sofas, corner sofas and armchairs.

The Martindale result should not be judged on its own. Durability is also affected by the quality of the fibres, the stability of the weave, resistance to pilling and light, and the way the fabric is cared for.

Another factor is the weight of the fabric, given in g/m2. Upholstery materials often fall in the range of about 250-450 g/m2, but a high weight does not in itself guarantee high resistance. A dense velvet can have very good performance parameters at a lower weight than a heavy woven fabric.

From workshop experience at Vilmax we know that durable upholstery should be assessed as a set of parameters: Martindale, pilling, weave stability, colour fastness and ease of care. One high result does not replace an overall assessment of the material.

That is why, when configuring made-to-order upholstered furniture, it is worth matching the cover to how the piece will be used: one way for a living room used occasionally, another for a family corner sofa used every day.

Hydrophobic and stain-resistant fabric - what is the difference?

A hydrophobic fabric has a finish that slows down how quickly liquid penetrates into the fibres. When water, coffee or juice is spilled, the liquid forms droplets on the surface for a while. This gives the user time to blot the liquid up with an absorbent cloth or paper towel.

Being hydrophobic does not, however, mean full stain resistance. If dirt stays on the surface for a long time or is rubbed in hard, the liquid can penetrate between the fibres. A water repellent coating is meant above all to delay the absorption of liquid, not to create a completely impermeable surface.

A different function is served by technologies described as Easy Clean, Water Clean or Smart Clean. Their job is to make it easier to remove typical marks, often using water and a soft cloth. A fabric can combine both functions, but the terms are not identical.

The best practice after a spill is simple: do not rub the mark in, blot it up as quickly as possible. Rubbing can push pigment and liquid deeper into the structure of the material.

Which upholstery for a dog or cat - velvet or woven fabric?

In a home with animals, the structure of the surface matters most. Loose or looped weaves can look striking, but a claw catches more easily on protruding threads and causes a snag. That applies especially to materials with a pronounced, open weave.

Smooth velvet or velour usually has a more compact surface, so a claw has fewer places to catch on. Pet-friendly fabrics are designed to reduce hair working its way in and to make it easier to remove with a vacuum cleaner or lint roller. That does not mean full resistance to scratching.

With pets it is worth checking:

  • how compact and smooth the surface is,
  • resistance to snagging,
  • the Martindale test result,
  • whether it can be cleaned with water,
  • how easily hair can be removed.

If the priority is pet-friendly fabrics, a compact velvet will most often be a more practical choice than a thick weave with visible loops. Remember, though, that a Pet Friendly label does not replace the other technical parameters of a fabric.

How do I care for upholstery fabrics so that furniture lasts for years?

Even a high-grade fabric needs to be used correctly. Regular cleaning of upholstered furniture prevents dust and particles being rubbed into the structure of the fibres.

The key rules:

  • vacuum the upholstery regularly with a soft attachment, without aggressive brushing;
  • react to a stain immediately - blot the liquid from the outside towards the middle instead of rubbing it in;
  • do not use random detergents, bleaches, alcohol or solventsif the fabric manufacturer does not permit them;
  • do not soak the material - excess water can leave tidemarks and affect the layers beneath the upholstery;
  • avoid heavy rubbing and hot air, which can change the direction of the pile, the sheen or the colour of the surface.

Before using any cleaning product, check the recommendations of the fabric manufacturer and test it in an inconspicuous place. That applies especially to velvets, fabrics with functional coatings and materials in intense colours.

A good fabric for a sofa used every day should therefore combine a suitable Martindale result, a stable structure, easy cleaning and parameters matched to the household. For a family with children, technology that slows down liquid absorption will matter more; with a dog or cat, a compact surface and resistance to snagging. It is this matching, rather than a single marketing parameter, that decides the real life of upholstery.

FAQ - frequently asked questions about upholstery fabrics

Which upholstery fabric is the most durable?

Durable upholstery can be taken to mean a material with a compact structure, good resistance to pilling and a result of at least 45,000-50,000 Martindale cycles for intensive domestic use. The abrasion result alone is not enough - the quality of the fibres and the stability of the weave also matter.

How many Martindale cycles should a sofa fabric have?

For standard domestic use around 20,000-30,000 cyclesis usually sufficient, while for a sofa or corner sofa used every day it is worth choosing fabrics achieving 45,000 cycles and above.

Is a hydrophobic fabric completely waterproof?

No. A hydrophobic fabric makes it harder for liquid to penetrate quickly and keeps the liquid on the surface as droplets for a while. That does not mean full waterproofing, so a spill should be blotted up as quickly as possible.

Which fabric is best with a dog or cat?

In a home with animals, good choices are smooth, compact velvets and velours, especially materials labelled Pet Friendly. Their surface reduces the chance of a claw catching and makes hair easier to remove than with loose, looped weaves.

Can Easy Clean fabrics be cleaned with water alone?

Many fabrics with Easy Clean technology are designed so that typical marks can be removed with water and a soft cloth. You should always follow the instructions of the manufacturer of the specific fabric, however, because care methods can differ.

Does a higher weight mean a stronger fabric?

Not always. Weight, for example 300 or 400 g/m2, tells you the mass of the material per unit area but does not on its own describe its resistance. A light, compact velvet can have a better Martindale result than a heavier but more loosely woven fabric.

How quickly do I have to react to a stain on a sofa?

Ideally immediately. The liquid should be gently blotted up without rubbing, because heavy rubbing can carry the dirt deeper into the fibres. With hydrophobic fabrics, a quick reaction makes the best use of the protective coating.
